Kisspeptin is a naturally occurring hypothalamic peptide that acts as a master regulator of the reproductive system, stimulating the hypothalamus to release GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone). It triggers the release of LH and FSH, vital hormones for fertility, testosterone, and estrogen regulation. It is used in research and therapeutics for fertility, libido enhancement, and hormone optimization.
Key Functions and Benefits
  • Reproductive Axis Regulator: It initiates the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by acting on the Kiss1 receptor (KISS1R) in the hypothalamus.
  • Fertility Enhancement: Used to stimulate ovulation in women (especially in cases of hypothalamic amenorrhea) and support hormone balance.
  • Libido Enhancement: Studies indicate kisspeptin improves sexual desire and stimulates the brain's sexual response pathways in both men and women.
Hormone Optimization: It encourages natural testosterone and estrogen regulation rather than suppressing it, which can be useful in treating low libido.Puberty Onset: It is essential for initiating puberty by triggering the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
Therapeutic and Scientific Applications
  • Infertility Treatment: Investigated as an alternative to hCG for triggering ovulation in IVF treatment, as it is believed to have a lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
  • Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD): Clinical studies (e.g., from Imperial College London) demonstrate its potential to treat low sexual desire in both women and men.
  • Tumor Suppression: Originally identified as a metastasis suppressor gene, it can inhibit tumor spread.
Structure and Administration
  • Forms: The most common active form is Kisspeptin-10 (Kp-10), which is a 10-amino acid peptide. Other forms include Kp-54, Kp-14, and Kp-13.
  • Sequence: The amino acid sequence for Kisspeptin-10 is Tyr-Asn-Trp-Asn-Ser-Phe-Gly-Leu-Arg-Phe-NH2.
  • Administration: It is typically administered via subcutaneous injection (under the skin).
Side Effects and Safety
  • Tolerability: Clinical trials indicate that kisspeptin is generally well-tolerated with a favorable safety profile.
  • Safety Profile: No significant serious adverse effects have been reported in published trials, though it should be used with medical supervision to monitor hormone levels.
